Angie's Disinfectant Tips

Thanks to Angie Freel of the Saline County Cooperative Extension Service for sharing these disinfecting pointers!

Disinfectants – the green way!
Pure vinegar – put in spray bottle and spray
Pure Hydrogen Peroxide – put in spray bottle and spray
This herbal antibacterial disinfectant is better and safer than the popular antibacterial cleaners on the market today. It is ideal for kitchens and bathrooms and can be stored indefinitely.

Tea tree disinfectant – 2 Tablespoons Borax, 2 cups of hot water, ¼ cup lemon juice & 20 drops of tea tree oil. Dissolve borax in hot water, shake well and add remaining ingredients.

·       Another homemade recipe, especially good for disinfecting toilets is a combination of vinegar and essential oils.
Mix two cups of white distilled vinegar with 15 drops of tea tree, thyme, eucalyptus, or pine essential oils. Spray in the toilet then clean as usual,
Use 5% vinegar if possible.
When making homemade cleaning products, always make sure to label the bottles.
All Purpose Disinfectant Cleaner
This is an effective all purpose disinfectant cleanser. It's an all-natural and green substitute for chemical disinfectants. Use this for counter tops, sinks, or spray on floors and wipe away spills.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1.    In a plastic pump spray bottle, add 1/4 cup white vinegar. Vinegar is a disinfectant and it shines up surfaces really well without leaving behind any buildup.
2.    Squirt one teaspoon plain dish washing liquid into the spray bottle. The dish washing liquid should be just a plain old soapy liquid, not one with added bleach or bleach alternative. The cheapest, scent free variety is best. Dish washing liquid is a good cleaning agent, and the soapy film will be kept to a minimum with the vinegar addition.
3.    Add about 20 drops tea tree oil to the mixture. This oil will have quite a strong smell, but tea tree oil is a very effective disinfectant. Shake to mix well. Finally fill the bottle with water. That's it!
